Isolation Valve Installed in a Tight Spot!

They said it couldn't be done

Phototronics in Milpitas, CA needed to add on a temporary rental chiller to

 increase cooling capacity and to allow for two chiller units to be taken out

 of service and repaired one at a time. Unfortunately both units were on a

 looped system and could not be isolated from each other due to lack of a valve.

The contractor was scheduled to set up and install the temporary bypass

piping to the rental chiller. They asked Tap Master Inc. to look at the job,

they stated it was very congested area on the roof and they needed an

isolation valve installed while the system stayed in service.

It turned out that the only place that we could install the 6" isolation valve

(but keep the two units in service) had only 21" of straight pipe between

welded tees. The two tees fed the chiller units on a looped system.

Tap Master Inc. had recently upgraded it's line stop equipment and

has new folding head units. The folding head line stop units allowed

Tap Master Inc. to stop off the 6" line. This extra space, created by

the smaller line stop equipment gave us just enough space to cut in

a new 6" Butterfly valve between the two branch tees.

Now the hardest part of the job was in the hands of one of our

welders. He had to stand on his head in order to get the welding

done with only 6" of space under the pipe and 7" behind with

obstacles everywhere! It is surprising what you can get someone

to do if you bet then a dollar they can do it.

He won the dollar, but everyone else won as well. Everyone likes
